Transylvania/U.S. Exchange

Peacedale Global Arts collaborates with faculty at the Arts University of Târgu Mureș to create artistic residencies in Transylvania for U.S. writers to work with playwrights, translators, and artists in the Romanian and Hungarian theater communities.

Transylvania Playwriting Residency

This program gathers artists across three cultures (Hungarian, Romanian, and American) to experience theater-making models in different cultural contexts. Theater work becomes the conduit through which artists share perspectives, bridge divided cultures, and better understand their own creative practices. The residency is broken into two parts and coincides with the Arts University's international Studio Festival each year. This 2-year program combines translation workshops, public readings, a generative writing workshop, and a collaborative community of writers, translators, actors, and directors.

Activities in Transylvania:

  • Transylvania Playwriting Residency Year One, November 2023. Year One centers on writing workshops utilizing three languages in which emerging and established playwrights write and share new pages daily. Participants include U.S. playwrights as well as graduate students and alumni from the Hungarian and Romanian sections of the Arts University’s two-year master’s degree program in Playwriting. The 2023 U.S. delegation consists of playwrights Rajiv Joseph and Mona Monsour, with Peacedale representatives Megan McClain and John Clinton Eisner.
